However, with advancements in technology, the emergence of “digital proofing equipment” has made small-batch proofing more economical. Digital proofing costs typically start around $200, depending on the complexity of the product, colors, and technical requirements. Although digital proofing has reduced costs, sample fees can still be very high for complex products. For instance, one of our partner companies spent 1.4 million CNY creating cigarette box samples for a client over the course of a year.

The “unfolded size” of a custom packaging box directly impacts its price. Standard printing equipment can handle bi-fold printing needs up to 1060mm*760mm. If the unfolded size exceeds this range, larger 1650mm*1250mm equipment is required. For sizes beyond 1650mm, a “splicing” process is needed to complete the printing, as printers capable of handling these dimensions are extremely rare and expensive. The choice of printing equipment directly affects production costs, so larger product sizes require higher startup costs and increase production complexity.

The “order quantity” significantly impacts the price of custom packaging boxes. When producing packaging boxes, each production step has a fixed “startup cost”, including fees for printing, die-cutting, and gluing. This means that these startup costs exist regardless of order quantity. Small orders (like 500 or 1,000 units) have a higher per-unit cost since the startup costs are spread across fewer boxes. In contrast, larger orders can effectively reduce the per-box price, as more units can absorb these fixed costs.

“Material selection” is another key factor in determining the price of custom packaging boxes. The material affects the look and texture of the box and has a direct impact on cost. Common materials include white cardboard, coated paper, art paper, and corrugated paper, each with a different price point. The cost differences are especially noticeable in large orders. Choosing materials that match the product's positioning and budget is essential, as material selection affects both the product’s appearance and the durability, cost and structure of the box.

Techniques like foil stamping, embossing, and spot UV can add visual and tactile highlights to the packaging, but these processes often require more setup time and manpower, increasing production difficulty and scrap rates. When choosing techniques, brands need to balance budget and aesthetics to enhance packaging quality while controlling costs reasonably.

For international business, “logistics and shipping costs” are the final key factor in the price of custom packaging boxes. Shipping costs vary greatly based on the box's size, weight, and destination. Long-distance shipping, in particular, means that logistics costs will be distributed across each box.
